Brighton Fringe: Kasper’s Puppet Theatre – A Traditional Fairytale
Kasper’s Puppet Theatre presents an enchanting fairytale for children, featuring authentic Hohnsteiner hand carved characters. Join our hero Kasper, as he takes his young audience through the enchanted forest in search of the King’s missing dog in a race to save him from the clutches of the wicked robber. A great little show for children in the Bavarian tradition.
The puppet Kasper has a long history originating in Germany, he was first seen in Munich in 1858 and was similar to Punch and Judy. In 1920 Max Jacob created the form of Kasper which is most commonly performed today known as the Hohnsteiner style in which Kasper is a friendly character involved in traditional Bavarian fairytales. Performed by Benjamin Hasker, Kasper’s Puppet Theatre is believed to be the only Kasper Show in Britain, using original hand carved Hohnsteiner puppets and translating popular stories presented for today’s young audience.

Brighton Festival: King Lear
By William Shakespeare
Old King Lear, weary of royal duties, proposes to break up his kingdom and divide it among his three daughters. But this rash generosity is cruelly repaid and Lear discovers too late the false values by which he has lived – and, in turn, the suffering common to all humanity.
Performed on an Elizabethan-style stage, a troupe of travelling players breathe new life into Shakespeare’s great tragedy, with the St Nicholas Rest Garden as a haunting backdrop. Tempestuous poetry shot through with touches of humour and moments of heart-rending simplicity, King Lear is one of the deepest artistic explorations of the human condition.
Al fresco Shakespeare is a popular Festival event every year – a chance to enjoy classic theatre in a relaxed and unusual setting. Bring a picnic and a blanket, and prepare for top-flight theatre in a unique environment.
