Following the success of last year’s festival ice cream competition, the Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival has teamed up with Donatello Italian restaurant and Rockinghorse to launch a competition to find an all-new Brighton inspired pizza for this summer.
Every primary school in the city has been approached with information about the competition, and the festival team hope to beat last year’s 1,114 entries.
“We were overwhelmed by how enthusiastic and adventurous children were with the Great Brighton Ice Cream Competition, and this is another exciting opportunity for them to let their imaginations run wild”, said festival committee member Shoshana Plail.
“We would like children entering the competition to experiment with flavours and let loose their creativity as they think about what they would love their new pizza to taste – and look – like. I can’t wait to see what they come up with!”
After the closing date of Friday 9th March 2012, the ideas will be judged by a panel of experts – including local food writer Andrew Kay and pizza supremo Sue Addis – with the top three pizzas available to buy during the food festival at Donatello: the public’s most popular pizza will be crowned the winner on the Live Food Show stage in Brighton Dome on Saturday 7 April.
The winner will be asked to visit the Donatello kitchens in central Brighton to see their pizza made, before enjoying a meal at the restaurant with their family. From April to September, the public will be able to buy the newly crowned Great Brighton Pizza at Donatello, with a donation to local children’s charity Rockinghorse for every purchase.
Analiese Doctrove, Rockinghorse’s Community Fundraising Manager, said: “Rockinghorse is delighted to be involved in the Great Brighton Pizza Competition, especially following the success of last year’s Great Brighton Ice-cream Competition and we’re extremely grateful to Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival, Child Friendly Brighton and Donatello. This is a fun and exciting competition for kids to get creative and help raise money for local sick and disabled children and we can’t wait to see the entries flood in for a Brighton-inspired pizza!”
Entries should be submitted on white A4 paper to the following address (with child’s name, class name and school printed clearly on the back of the entry) before Friday 9 March 2012: Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival, First Floor, Thorne’s Building, 39 Upper Gardner Street, Brighton, BN1 4AN
