JW Productions is a theatrical producer of family and children’s entertainment, starting out at Brighton’s Emporium Theatre bringing adaptations of ‘The Jungle Book’, ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’, ‘Peter Pan: A Musical Adventure’ and ‘Treasure Island’ to life. The company (still based in Brighton) is bringing three productions to the city this year, owned and managed by stage director James Weisz.
The first production of the year is ‘The Adventures of Robin Hood’ during the May half-term as part of Brighton Fringe at Brighton Open Air Theatre (BOAT). Robin Hood and his merry band whisk you to Sherwood forest to rise up against the villainous, tax-collecting Sheriff of Nottingham and save the day, with heroes to cheer, baddies to boo, and plenty of narrow escapes and daring escapades. The production was written by Mike Carter, adaptor of over 20 plays and musicals for children. Last year’s ‘Wind in The Willows’ played in spectacular weather and saw thousands attend the performances. BOAT is the ideal venue for children, with the venue’s relaxed nature, and parents and children are able to relax, eat, drink, get up, stretch their legs and feel comfortable in the nature of the venue, without getting told off or hushed.
‘Swallows & Amazons’ will be JW Productions’ second production at BOAT, a superb adaptation from Helen Edmundson with original music and songs by Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy. Written in 1930, ‘Swallows & Amazons’ tells the story of Captain Jack and his able crew as they set sail for Wildcat Island on an adventure of a lifetime, with dastardly pirates, savages and the villainous Captain Flint. A story set in an idyllic era, a time of endless summer evenings and the beauty of youthful imagination. With a cast made up of adults and children accompanied by beautiful live music, this production will appeal to all generations of family, from children as young as 5 to grandparents.
Since 2013 James has been producing and directing a professional pantomime, with his company’s trademarks of a good story, a small professional, local cast and a child chorus. James is delighted to be staging JM Barrie’s classic ‘Peter Pan’ this Christmas at the beautiful Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts. First seen in Brighton at the Theatre Royal in 1904, the tale of the boy who never grows up is a tremendous Christmas treat. Follow Wendy and the Darling Family as Peter and Tinkerbell bring them to the wonderful, magic world of Neverland to face pirates, save the natives, swim with mermaids and join in with a big adventure!
JW Productions is dedicated to bringing accessible and affordable family entertainment to Brighton & Hove.
