The Level, Ditchling Road, Brighton BN1 4ZN
One of the largest parks in Brighton and Hove, it is situated in the Valley Gardens Conservation area.
Details of the new playground (being constructed during spring 2013 and ready to be opened in summer 2013)
The playground, at the south end of The Level, will include play opportunities for children of all ages and abilities, including those in wheelchairs. The whole area will be fenced and it will include a water drinking fountain, bins and seating, including picnic benches. There will be attractive but hard-wearing planting, grassy areas for informal play and trees to provide shade.
The area is 700 m2 larger than the combined existing play areas. That figure does not include the new fountains, the pétanque terrain and sensory gardens in the south, and the wheeled-sports facility planned for the north end.
The new Rose Walk café and public toilets will provide all the facilities needed for a family playday out on The Level.
The playground has an extensive sand play area to the south, with grass mounds and flat spaces to the north. A ‘boardwalk’ runs through the sand play area, while resin-bound gravel paths wind their way through the grassy areas.
There will be a range of exciting equipment in the new playground as well as musical equipment and landscape features, such as a willow tunnel.
Sheep and a shark …
The playground will also have a flock of seven wandering sheep and a snappy shark swimming around in the sand play area. These pieces are being sculpted out of wood by Woodland Products, and are being designed just for The Level.
Volunteer playworkers wanted
We will shortly be starting free playworker training for people (18+) wanting to help the council’s Play Service run play sessions at The Level. Details will be announced soon. Contact the Play Service directly if you are interested. This training is part of The Level Activities Programme
